An online meeting dedicated to protecting children from harmful and dangerous information has been held.

On November 20, an online meeting was held with children, featuring government officials and experts in the relevant field. The event was organized as part of the project titled "Protecting Children from Harmful and Dangerous Information in the Digital Society." The project is implemented under the initiative of the "Regional Development" Public Union, with the support of "Nar" and in partnership with the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the State Committee for Family, Women, and Children Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Association of Cybersecurity Organizations of Azerbaijan, and ADA University.

The meeting, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child adopted by the General Assembly of the League of Nations and World Children's Day, was organized with the participation of over 100 schoolchildren representing the cities and regions of Baku, Nakhchivan, Ganja, Lankaran, and Gabala.

Gunay Agayeva, a representative of the "Regional Development" Public Union, welcomed the participants and congratulated them on these significant occasions. She provided an overview of the project's objectives and importance, as well as details about the activities planned within the framework of the project over the next month.

The meeting featured speeches by Sabina Aliyeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan; Bahar Muradova, Chairperson of the State Committee for Family, Women, and Children Affairs; Metin Karimli, Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Science and Education; Vafa Kazdal, Vice-Rector of ADA University; Hokuma Karimova, Director of Public Relations and Corporate Communications at "Nar"; Tabriz Gasimov, Legal Expert at the "Regional Development" Public Union; Elvin Balajanov, Chairman of the Board of the Association of Cybersecurity Organisations of Azerbaijan; and Rauf Jabbarov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of ACOA.

The speeches highlighted the efforts made in Azerbaijan to ensure and protect children's rights, including the improvement of the legislative framework and the adoption of international best practices. Speakers emphasized the necessity of safeguarding children's rights in a digitizing society during an era of expanding use of information and communication technologies. They discussed steps taken to shield children from harmful information and the implementation of awareness-raising projects.

The importance of collaboration between relevant state institutions and civil society organizations to achieve effective results in this area was also underscored. Furthermore, the speakers encouraged children to continuously enhance their knowledge and skills to protect their rights in the digital society, remain vigilant and responsible, develop media literacy, and rely on more reliable and verified sources of information.

The meeting continued with a Q&A session, during which schoolchildren's questions were addressed on topics such as the measures taken by institutions to protect children's rights in the digital environment, existing legislation regulating protection from harmful information, the impact of digital technology advancements on the organization of education in schools, guidelines for safe online behaviour for children, and the technologies used to safeguard social media accounts and personal information. Participants' suggestions were also heard and discussed.

The event concluded with a flash mob created from the footage recorded during the meeting.
